Miami airport taxis run on the meter now

There is no flat fare. Miami-Dade resolution R-700-22, adopted 19 July 2022, removed the MIA flat fare rates for Zones A, B, C, D, E and Zones 1 to 5. MIA's taxi page, read 17 September 2026, lists metered fares only, a $15 minimum for trips originated at MIA and a $2.00 airport origination fee.

Is there a flat rate taxi from Miami airport to South Beach?

No, and there has not been one since 19 July 2022. On that date the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners adopted Resolution R-700-22, which did not adjust the airport zone fares, it deleted them. Four separate sections of the text remove four separate groups of flat rates. MIA's own taxi page, read 17 September 2026, carries a meter rate, a minimum fare and an airport charge, and no zone table of any kind.

Before that vote there were 11 flat fare zones for taxicab trips beginning or ending at MIA, according to the county staff memorandum attached to the resolution. Those zone rates had last been adjusted on 3 March 2015. Anything still quoting one round number for South Beach is reproducing the 2015 table, withdrawn and never replaced.

The removal is written clause by clause, which is why it can be verified rather than inferred.

How much is a taxi from Miami airport to South Beach now?

Whatever the meter reads, plus $2.00, with a floor of $15 on the meter. MIA publishes the rate as $2.95 for the first one-sixth of a mile, $0.85 for each additional one-sixth up to one mile, then $0.55 for each additional one-sixth of a mile after that. Run the fractions out and the first mile is $7.20 and every mile after it is $3.30.

The county memorandum confirms that arithmetic. It prints an equivalent five-mile trip cost of $20.40 under the rate it adopted, up from $16.80, an increase of 21 percent. $7.20 plus four miles at $3.30 is exactly $20.40, so the per-mile figure holds at any distance.

The table applies that rate to a range of distances. It is arithmetic on MIA's rate card rather than an observation of one journey, because the meter also charges $0.40 per minute ($24.00 per hour) of waiting time, and a causeway at five in the afternoon adds minutes rather than miles.

Road tolls sit on top. Both MIA's rate card and Section 1 of the resolution put tolls in addition to the meter fare, with the passenger paying no more than the SunPass rate on any SunPass roadway. Extra passengers and hand baggage are free.

DistanceMeter fare on the published rateWith the $2.00 airport charge
1 mile$7.20, below the airport minimum$17.00 once the $15 meter minimum applies

8 miles$30.30$32.30
10 miles$36.90$38.90
12 miles$43.50$45.50

What are the two extra charges on a Miami airport taxi?

A $2.00 per trip airport origination charge and a $15 minimum fare, both created by the same 2022 resolution that removed the zones. They are what separates an MIA taxi receipt from a taxi receipt anywhere else in Miami-Dade, and neither one is a tip or a driver's invention. Two more charges can appear alongside them.

  • $2.00 per trip. MIA's rate card states the charge has been added to the meter fare for trips that originate from the airport or PortMiami. It is printed county policy, not an add-on.
  • $15 minimum on the meter. Section 7 of the resolution establishes a minimum fare of $15.00 for trips originated at MIA or the Port of Miami. The rate card gives the tie-break, if the meter shows a number greater than $15.00, the greater number shown on the meter shall be paid.
  • Tolls at the SunPass rate. Added to the meter fare, and capped so a passenger never pays more than the SunPass toll on a SunPass roadway.
  • Waiting time at $0.40 per minute. Billed as $24.00 per hour, which is what turns a short distance in heavy traffic into a total that looks wrong for the mileage.

Can a Miami taxi charge me less than the published rate?

Everywhere in Miami-Dade except out of the airport. This clause gets almost no coverage and it changes how you read any price quoted at the rank. Section 1 of Resolution R-700-22 allows operators to provide service at a rate below the maximum rate, then carves out trips originating from Miami International Airport or the Port of Miami.

So in the city a taxi may legally undercut the published maximum to compete with a ride app. Leaving MIA it may not. The effect is that the number on MIA's rate card is the number rather than a ceiling somebody might discount, and a fixed figure offered at the curb is not a county rate. A booked car is priced by contract instead, and we set the two against each other in airport transfers against a taxi rank.

One zone system did survive the vote, which is why the vocabulary persists. The county memorandum says the Airport Regional Taxicab Service program, made up of three short-haul taxi zones for trips originated from MIA, will continue but passengers will be charged the meter rate instead of a flat fare. The zones remain a dispatch geography. They stopped being a price list in 2022.

Why did Miami-Dade get rid of the airport taxi zone fares?

Because the zone prices were pinned to 2015 costs. The memorandum attached to the resolution records transportation CPI for the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach market moving from 208.769 to 271.020, a change of 30 percent, and fuel CPI from 174.209 to 231.516, a change of 33 percent. The Taxicab Advisory Group recommended dropping the zone fares on 16 March 2022.

A meter tracks a route and a fixed zone price does not, so a flat fare set seven years earlier had become the problem rather than the protection. The county kept the maximum meter rate as the safeguard and replaced the short-haul zone fares with the $15 airport minimum.

The same resolution created a second charge that catches people who never read it. Section 6 establishes a 30 percent surcharge above the taxicab meter rate for larger vehicles such as sport utility vehicles and vans, and it does not apply to accessible vehicles. MIA's taxi page, read 17 September 2026, adds the part you can act on, vehicles authorized to charge it display a 30 percent surcharge decal inside.

On the published rate a ten-mile trip meters at $36.90. Add the surcharge and it becomes $47.97, an $11.07 difference decided by which vehicle you were waved toward. Wheelchair accessible taxis are available at MIA on request, and the surcharge does not apply to them.

Is there a cheaper way from MIA to Miami Beach?

Yes, and MIA prices it on its own site. The airport's public transportation page, read 17 September 2026, puts the Miami Beach Bus at $2.25 each way and has Route 150 Miami Beach Airport Express running every 30 minutes from 6 a.m. to 11:40 p.m., seven days a week, between the MIA Metrorail station and Miami Beach, from 41st Street to South Pointe Drive. Metrorail is the same $2.25 each way.

The catch is the connection and the clock. Route 150 leaves from the Metrorail station inside the Miami Intermodal Center rather than the terminal curb, so it takes an MIA Mover ride to reach, and boarding needs an EASY Card pass sold there. Service stops at 11:40 p.m., so a landing after midnight has no bus. At midday two people ride for $4.50 against a metered fare that cannot start below $17.00 before tolls.

If you take the rank instead, four things are worth knowing.

  • Use the stand on the arrivals (ground) level outside baggage claim, staffed by uniformed Miami-Dade Aviation Department personnel. MIA's page states that soliciting ground transportation inside the terminal is illegal and many solicitors are unlicensed and uninsured.
  • Check the cabin for a 30 percent surcharge decal, and ask for a standard sedan if you do not need a van.
  • Expect a meter, not a quote. Nobody at MIA has a county flat fare to offer.
  • Budget the $2.00 airport charge, the $15 meter minimum, tolls at the SunPass rate and $0.40 a minute in traffic.

How do I check the current MIA taxi rate myself?

Read two pages and one PDF. MIA's taxi page carries the live rate, its printed rate card repeats it and cites Resolution R-700-22 by number, and the resolution text on miamidade.gov shows which flat fares were struck out. Where a third party page disagrees with those three, the county wins. Every figure above was read on 17 September 2026 and dated for that reason, which is how we handle numbers across the site, set out in our method.

The answer is not the same twice by city. Dubai publishes no flat airport fare either, covered in Dubai airport taxis have no flat fare, while Milan Malpensa goes the other way with a fixed airport fare. If you booked a car instead of joining the rank, the waiting rules are a separate trap, in what an airport transfer no-show costs.

One last point for a US arrival. Checking a meter rate or a route at the curb needs data before a hotel login, and the options are compared in our USA eSIM guide.

Questions about ground transport

Is there a flat rate from Miami airport to South Beach?

No. Miami-Dade Resolution R-700-22, adopted 19 July 2022, removed the flat fare rates for Zones A, B, C, D, E and Zones 1 to 5, along with the MIA to Port of Miami flat rate. MIA's taxi page, read 17 September 2026, lists metered fares only. Any zone table you find for South Beach is quoting a price list the county withdrew.

How much is a taxi from MIA to South Beach in 2026?

It is metered, so the honest answer is a range. On MIA's published rate, read 17 September 2026, the first mile is $7.20 and each mile after it is $3.30, plus a $2.00 airport charge and tolls at the SunPass rate. The meter cannot bill less than $15 on a trip starting at MIA, and waiting time runs at $24.00 per hour.

Why is there a $15 minimum on a Miami airport taxi?

Section 7 of Resolution R-700-22 established a minimum fare of $15.00 for trips originated at MIA or the Port of Miami, replacing the short-haul flat fares the same vote removed. MIA's rate card gives the tie-break, if the meter shows a number greater than $15.00 then the greater number shown on the meter shall be paid. The $2.00 airport charge is added to the meter fare.

Do Miami airport taxis still use zones A to E?

The zones exist, the fares do not. The county memorandum attached to the resolution says the Airport Regional Taxicab Service program of three short-haul zones for trips originated from MIA continues, but passengers are charged the meter rate instead of a flat fare. A driver naming a zone is not wrong. A website attaching a 2015 price to that zone is.

Why was my Miami airport taxi 30 percent more than the meter?

You were probably in a van or an SUV. Section 6 of Resolution R-700-22 allows a 30 percent surcharge above the taxicab meter rate for larger vehicles, and MIA states that vehicles authorized to charge it display a 30 percent surcharge decal inside the cabin. It is optional for the driver and does not apply to accessible vehicles providing service to wheelchair users.

Is Uber cheaper than a taxi from Miami airport?

MIA publishes no ride app prices to compare. Its page says only that ride app pickups are available on the first level for arrivals and the second level for departures, and tells you to check your app for the door number. Ride app pricing is set by the company and moves with demand, so unlike the taxi meter there is no county maximum to check it against.
