How many days of hospital does 50,000 dollars of cover buy

Seventeen days on a general ward in Ottawa, or four in the intensive care unit of the same hospital. That is what the lowest published cover amount on a travel medical policy, 50,000 USD, comes to once you divide it by a rate a hospital prints for the patient it cannot bill to a public health system.

Queensway Carleton Hospital in Ottawa publishes CAD 4,005 a day for a regular acute care ward and CAD 15,642 a day for intensive care, on a fee page for patients without health insurance marked effective 1 April 2026. Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney publishes AUD 2,838.00 a day for accommodation in a general ward and AUD 7,198.00 a day for intensive or coronary care, in its brochure for overseas visitors.

Convert 50,000 USD at the European Central Bank reference rates dated 15 September 2026 and you are holding CAD 69,599 or AUD 70,171. Divide by the day rate, round down to whole days, and the limit stops being a number with four zeros after it and becomes a length of stay.

None of the four rows is a quote or an estimate. Each is a number the hospital puts in front of the patient who arrives without a provincial health card or a Medicare card.

Why does the same limit buy 17 days on a ward and four in intensive care

Because the level of care moves the price far more than the room does. In Ottawa the intensive care rate is 3.9 times the ward rate. In Sydney it is 2.5 times. Neither multiple is something you pick on arrival, which is what makes the ward figure the wrong one to plan with.

Room type barely registers next to that gap. Queensway Carleton charges non-residents CAD 4,295 for a semi-private room and CAD 4,355 for a private room, 7 and 9 per cent above the ward rate. The question is whether the limit survives a transfer to intensive care.

Arrival is billed too. The same Ottawa page lists CAD 1,242 for an emergency department visit by a non-resident of Canada, before any admission happens. A 50,000 USD limit is 56 of those visits, or one visit plus 17 ward days, or one visit plus four days of intensive care. The Ontario numbers for imaging sit in the same schedule, and what an MRI costs a non-resident is a separate line again.

What is not included in a hospital day rate

The day rate buys the bed. The Sydney brochure is unusually direct about what arrives on separate invoices, and it is most of the medicine.

Repatriation and an air ambulance are the items most likely to finish a 50,000 limit before a single night on a ward, because neither ever appears on a hospital bill at all. Our note on what an air ambulance out of Spain averaged puts one published number on that.

One practical detail the brochure raises and no comparison page does. The hospital asks overseas patients to contact their insurer as soon as possible and to request a written guarantee of payment, and it asks for an email address and an overseas address. A data only travel plan has no number that can take the insurer's call back, and how a travel eSIM works covers the difference before it matters.

  • A contingency fee of AUD 350.00 a day, charged on top of the accommodation rate. Add only that and 50,000 USD falls from 24 general ward days to 22.
  • Surgeon, anaesthetist and prostheses, each of which the brochure says may arrive as a separate invoice if surgery is part of your care.
  • Doctors, physiotherapists, nurses, pathology, diagnostic tests and any equipment used or provided, all invoiced separately from the bed.
  • A minimum AUD 176.00 for each occasion of service, with the greater amount charged where a test costs more. A nurse or doctor consultation is AUD 176.00, pathology AUD 352.00, radiology AUD 176.00 per scan or the greater thereof.
  • Nothing for repatriation or an air ambulance, which never appears on a ward bill and sits in your policy limit instead.

Does a deductible change how far 50,000 dollars goes

Yes, and on the cheapest tier it changes the answer by a quarter. The 50,000 USD figure on this page is the coverage amount on the entry level tier of one widely sold policy, read on 16 September 2026, and the same product page shows that tier carrying a 25 per cent deductible while the two tiers above it show zero.

The page states the arithmetic in its own example. On a 1,000 USD hospital fee the client pays 250 USD and the insurance company pays 750 USD. Apply that to a 17-day Ottawa ward stay billed at roughly 50,000 USD and about 12,500 USD of it is yours, which is more than four of those 17 days paid out of your own pocket.

The same page puts its COVID-19 cover at 10 per cent of the coverage amount. On a 50,000 USD tier that is 5,000 USD, which at the Ottawa rates read today is one ward day with change, and less than half a day of intensive care. A sub limit is a second ceiling sitting inside the first, and our guide to what travel insurance covers lists the ones worth reading before the headline number.

Is 50,000 dollars enough medical cover for travel insurance

It depends on which bed, and the tiers above it are not a small improvement. Expressed in days at the four rates read today, moving from 50,000 USD to 150,000 USD turns four days of Ottawa intensive care into 13, and 500,000 USD turns them into 44.

Read the right hand columns rather than the left. The ward numbers are comfortable at every tier. The intensive care numbers are where the tiers separate, and the difference between four days and 13 is the difference between a limit that runs out during a stay and one that does not.

Two things this page cannot tell you. Whether either hospital would be the one that admits you, and whether your policy pays a hospital directly or reimburses you after you have settled. The Sydney brochure answers the second question for its own wards without ambiguity, payment is required before a booked admission or as soon as possible after an emergency one, and accommodation must be paid in full before discharge unless a payment plan is authorised.

How we turned a cover limit into a number of days

Four numbers and one exchange rate, all read on 16 September 2026. The cover amounts came from the tier list on a live policy page. The day rates came from a hospital fee page and a hospital brochure, each written for the uninsured overseas patient rather than for an insurer.

The conversion used the European Central Bank euro reference rates dated 15 September 2026, the latest in the bank's daily file when we read it on 16 September 2026, 1.1539 US dollars, 1.6062 Canadian dollars and 1.6194 Australian dollars to the euro. That gives 1.391975 Canadian dollars and 1.403415 Australian dollars to the US dollar. Day counts are rounded down, so 17 means 17 full days with a remainder too small to buy the eighteenth.

Both schedules will move. The Ottawa page is marked effective 1 April 2026 and the Sydney brochure says prices are correct at time of print but may be subject to change, so the day counts above belong to the date at the top of this post. The method does not move, and how we observe figures sets it out. Other posts that read a published number instead of estimating one are collected on the blog, including what it costs to give birth abroad uninsured.

Questions about insurance

How many days of hospital does 50,000 dollars of travel insurance cover?

At rates read on 16 September 2026, about 17 days on a regular acute care ward at Queensway Carleton Hospital in Ottawa at CAD 4,005 a day, and four days in its intensive care at CAD 15,642. At Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney the same limit is 24 general ward days at AUD 2,838, or nine in intensive or coronary care.

Is 50,000 dollars enough medical cover for travel insurance?

For a short ward stay, yes. For intensive care it is thin. The same 50,000 USD buys four days of Ottawa intensive care and nine days of Sydney intensive or coronary care, before surgeons, anaesthetists, pathology and repatriation are invoiced separately. The next tier up on the page we read, 150,000 USD, turns those four Ottawa days into 13.

Why is the intensive care day rate so much higher than the ward rate?

The published gap is large and it differs by hospital. Queensway Carleton charges non-residents 3.9 times its ward rate for intensive care, while Prince of Wales Sydney charges 2.5 times. By contrast a semi-private or private room in Ottawa costs only 7 to 9 per cent more than the ward. The level of care drives the bill, not the room you are in.

What does a hospital day rate for overseas patients include?

The bed and very little else. The Sydney brochure adds a contingency fee of AUD 350.00 a day and says surgeons, anaesthetists, prostheses, doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, pathology, diagnostic tests and equipment may all be invoiced separately, with a minimum AUD 176.00 for each occasion of service. Add only the contingency fee and 50,000 USD drops from 24 ward days to 22.

Does a 25 per cent deductible mean I pay a quarter of the hospital bill?

On the tier we read, yes. The policy page shows its entry tier at 50,000 USD with a 25 per cent deductible, and gives a worked example, on a 1,000 USD hospital fee the client pays 250 USD and the insurance company pays 750 USD. On a 50,000 USD stay that is 12,500 USD of your own money, more than four of the 17 Ottawa ward days.

What happens if my hospital bill goes past my policy limit?

The balance is yours, and hospitals ask for it early. Prince of Wales Hospital tells overseas visitors payment is due before a booked admission or as soon as possible after an emergency one, and that accommodation must be paid in full before discharge unless a payment plan is authorised. Without EFTPOS, card details, a bank cheque, a verifiable personal guarantee from an Australian citizen or an authorised payment plan, it limits treatment to medically necessary care.
