Turkey asks for insurance, and one embassy names 30,000 euros

Turkey's foreign ministry page, read 17 September 2026, requires all visa applicants to hold medical insurance valid during their stay and names no sum. A Turkish embassy visa checklist read the same day sets the floor at 30,000 euros or 50,000 dollars including repatriation. Visa free tourists, British passports included, file no application and are asked for nothing.

Is travel insurance mandatory for Turkey

Yes if you apply for a Turkish visa or a residence permit, no if you fly in visa free for a fortnight. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs page on Turkish visas, read on 17 September 2026, states that all applicants are required to have a medical insurance that will be valid during their stay (mfa.gov.tr). The Directorate General of Migration Management, listing the conditions for a visa given at a border gate, asks the traveller to have a valid health insurance to cover the period of stay of the foreigner in Turkey (en.goc.gov.tr).

Both sentences hang off an application. A British passport holder making a normal holiday trip never files one. The Foreign Office entry requirements page says you can visit Turkey without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, for business or tourism (gov.uk), and that page does not mention insurance at all. No application means no document list, no certificate to upload and nobody at the desk asking for one.

That is why the search results split so cleanly. Page after page says insurance is not mandatory for Turkey, which is true of the visa free tourist and false of everyone in the consulate queue.

Where does the 30,000 euro figure come from

From two places, and only one of them is Turkish. The first is Article 15 of the EU Visa Code, Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, which says in paragraph 3 that the minimum coverage shall be EUR 30 000, and in paragraph 1 that the policy must cover repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical attention and/or emergency hospital treatment or death (eur-lex.europa.eu, read 17 September 2026). Turkey is not in the Schengen area, so that text is not Turkish law, and the ministry's own visa page names no amount in euros, dollars or lira.

The second is a Turkish mission. The visa document checklist published by the Embassy of Turkiye in Islamabad, read on 17 September 2026, asks for a travel health insurance certificate covering the minimum of Euros 30.000 / US Dollars 50.000 and the period of stay in Turkey and the repatriation costs as well (islamabad-emb.mfa.gov.tr). So the number is real, it just lives in a consulate's document list rather than in the ministry text.

That matters for who it reaches. A sum set by one mission binds the applicants that mission handles. We read one checklist, not all of them, so treat 30,000 euros as the floor the mission holding your file is likely to ask for, and confirm it on that mission's own page before buying. For how far the same figure travels once it leaves the Schengen text, see the 30,000 euros converted into dollars.

Who has to show a policy and who does not

The condition follows the paperwork, not the plane. Seven situations, and the insurance line changes in every one of them.

Read the table as a chain. Nothing is asked of a visa free tourist, and everything is asked of the same person once they stay past 90 days in any 180 and have to convert to a residence permit at a governorate. The migration authority allows arrivals who have already used up their 90 days to enter if they pledge to apply to the provincial foreigners department within ten days, and that application does carry the insurance condition.

Does my policy from home count in Turkey

It does, and this is the part the vendor pages leave out because it sells nothing. The migration authority states that if the foreigners have a valid health insurance that they obtained in their home countries covering them in Turkey, such insurances are also regarded as valid within the scope of above mentioned rules (en.goc.gov.tr). Nobody is obliged to buy a Turkish product to satisfy a Turkish condition.

What gets a file rejected is scope and dates rather than the issuing country, so check four things on the certificate before it goes anywhere.

The authority also expects the policy to carry a statement of compliance with Law No. 6458, sought since 20 June 2014, which matters for residence permit files rather than a two week holiday. Our travel insurance guide sets out which lines actually pay out.

  • The territory reads Turkey by name, or worldwide with Turkey not excluded
  • The dates cover the whole stay including arrival and departure days, because the tested quantity is duration
  • The certificate shows the cover amount and says repatriation in words, since the embassy checklist asks for both
  • For a residence permit of less than a year, the policy runs to the end of the permit, not to the end of the trip

How much cover should a Turkey policy have

At least the checklist sum, and the cheapest published tier lands exactly on it. One insurer's Turkey page, read on 17 September 2026, prices its Start tier from 0.99 USD a day with a cover amount of 50,000 USD and a 25 percent deductible, its Gold tier from 1.75 USD a day with 150,000 USD and no deductible, and its Max+ tier from 5.9 USD a day with 500,000 USD and no deductible. The floor of the published range sits on the 50,000 dollar figure the Islamabad checklist names, so the sum itself is rarely what binds.

What binds is the small print underneath it. The cheapest tier carries a deductible while the two above it do not, which decides whether a clinic visit is a claim or a receipt you keep. Repatriation and air ambulance sit inside the same limit rather than beside it, and the sums involved are not small, as our note on air ambulance costs out of Spain shows. Insurers also subtract what someone else has already paid you, which is the trap in deducting the airline's payment.

So compare the deductible and the repatriation wording, not the headline sum, since every published tier already clears 30,000 euros.

What does Turkey actually check at the airport

Your passport, and it is stricter than the insurance question. The Foreign Office page says your passport must have an expiry date at least 150 days after the date you arrive and at least 1 blank page (gov.uk). The migration authority adds that since 1 January 2015 a passport without at least sixty days of validity beyond the expiry of the visa, visa exemption or residence permit will not guarantee admission (en.goc.gov.tr).

After that come the 90 days within 180 days rule, sufficient and regular financial resources for the stay, and justifiable grounds for the visit. Insurance is not a passport control document for a visa free arrival. It is a file document for visa and permit applicants, which is precisely why the two answers online contradict each other and both survive.

Insurance is also not the regime that pays when the flight itself goes wrong. A cancelled or long delayed flight home from Istanbul on a UK or EU carrier is handled under the flight compensation rules, and the medical policy has nothing to do with it.

The place the absence shows up is the hospital cashier, not the border. That is the honest version of the mandatory question. How we check and date every figure is set out in our methodology, and if the visa question itself is what brought you here, see why UK passports get no e-Visa.

Questions about insurance

Is travel insurance mandatory for Turkey in 2026

It depends on whether you apply for anything. The Turkish foreign ministry page read on 17 September 2026 requires all visa applicants to hold medical insurance valid during their stay, and the migration authority lists valid health insurance among the conditions for a visa given at a border gate. A British tourist on the 90 day exemption files no application, so nothing is asked.

Does Turkey require 30,000 euros of medical cover

The ministry page names no sum. The Embassy of Turkiye in Islamabad checklist, read on 17 September 2026, asks for a certificate covering a minimum of 30,000 euros or 50,000 dollars plus repatriation. The EU Visa Code sets the same 30,000 euros for Schengen visas, and Turkey is not in Schengen, so for Turkey the sum comes from the mission handling your file.

Do I need insurance for a Turkish e-Visa

The ministry wording covers applicants without carving out the electronic route, so plan on holding a policy valid for the whole stay. Keep the certificate with your e-Visa printout, since the migration authority expects travellers to show that printout to the airline and to the customs authorities and to keep it until the end of the trip. Ask the mission handling your nationality if in doubt.

Will they check my insurance at Istanbul airport

For a visa free arrival it is not a passport control document. The published checks are passport validity, the 90 days within 180 days rule, sufficient and regular financial resources and justifiable grounds for entry. The insurance condition lives in the visa file and in residence permit applications, which is why arriving tourists rarely see it raised at the desk.

Does my UK travel insurance cover Turkey

It satisfies the Turkish condition if it covers Turkey, because the migration authority accepts insurance obtained in the traveller's home country as valid when it covers them in Turkey. Check that the territory names Turkey rather than Europe only, that the dates span the full stay, and that repatriation is stated. Our [travel insurance guide](/guides/travel-insurance-what-it-covers/) lists the clauses worth reading twice.

How long does the policy have to last for Turkey

The whole stay. The ministry and the migration authority both describe cover for the period of stay, and for a residence permit of less than a year the authority asks for travel health insurance covering the duration. If the policy is shorter than the permit, the permit can be issued with a warning to extend the insurance, and cancellation is possible if you do not.
