Does EE charge for roaming in Japan?

Yes. EE's price guide dated 3 September 2026 places Japan in ROW Zone 3, where the only option is a 24-hour Roaming Pass at £8.00 per day. It does not unlock your UK allowance. It gives unlimited calls and texts plus 500 MB of data, checked 17 September 2026.

Does EE charge for roaming in Japan?

Yes, and the figure most pages quote is the wrong one. The EE Plan Price Guide for Pay Monthly and SIMO, with charges applicable from 3 September 2026, lists Japan in ROW Zone 3. There the only data option is the 24-hour Roaming Pass at £8.00 per day, and it does not unlock the data you already pay for at home. It gives unlimited calls and texts plus a hard 500 MB.

That distinction is the whole story. For ROW Zone 1 and Zone 2 the guide describes the pass allowance as "UK Plan Allowance (Roam Like Home)". For ROW Zone 3 it says "Unlimited minutes and SMS; 500 MB Data". Zone 2 and Zone 3 cost the same £8.00 a day, and only one of them hands you your own data.

EE is explicit that data does not run at all without a pass outside Europe. The guide states you need to buy one to use data while roaming outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland, and it sets no per-megabyte fallback rate for Japan anywhere in the document.

What does the £8 a day pass include in Japan?

Unlimited calls and texts, 500 MB of data, and 24 hours rather than a calendar day. The guide's footnote is precise about the clock, the daily pass price and the data allowance apply for 24 hours from the moment of purchase, not midnight to midnight. That matters on a late arrival. What counts as a chargeable day varies by network, and what triggers a roaming day charge is worth reading first.

Set against the other Rest of World zones, Zone 3 is the awkward one. Zone 1 and Zone 2 both add 7-day and 15-day passes on top of the daily. Zone 3 has neither.

Why do other pages quote a lower daily rate for EE in Japan?

Because they are quoting EE's European charge and pointing it at Asia. The same guide sets the Daily EU Charge at £2.72 per day, with a Weekly EU Roaming Pass at £16.50 and a 15-day EU Pass at £30.00. Those cover the EU, EEA and Switzerland, and Japan is not on that list. Any daily figure below £8.00 for Japan is a European charge, often an out-of-date one, not a Japan price.

The second thing to discard is product names that appear nowhere in the 3 September 2026 guide. The products EE actually names are the Daily EU Charge, the Weekly and 15-day EU Passes, and Roaming Pass ROW Zone 1 through Zone 4. Anything else is a third-party label.

The remaining top results are older EE community forum threads describing a price list that no longer applies. Our methodology explains how we date every figure to the day we read it. The European number has its own post, the EE daily EU roaming charge.

Why is Japan in Zone 3 when Thailand and South Korea are not?

This is the part that catches people mid-trip. Japan is an expensive roaming destination for EE while almost all of its neighbours are cheap ones. The zone table puts China, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and India in ROW Zone 1, where the £6.00 daily pass gives you your UK allowance. Hong Kong sits in Zone 2. Japan sits in Zone 3 with Macao, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Kazakhstan.

Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States are in Zone 1 too. So a UK traveller can roam on their own allowance across most of Asia and all of North America, then land in Tokyo and be capped at 500 MB a day for two pounds more.

The zone is only visible in the country table at the back of the guide, so check each country on a multi-stop trip rather than the region. Zone 4 is harsher again, and the £16 Zone 4 pass for 10MB shows how far the scale runs.

What does a week in Japan cost on EE compared with a travel eSIM?

Multiply the pass out and the gap opens quickly. Seven days in Japan on EE means seven purchases of the £8.00 pass, so £56.00 for 3.5 GB. On the same day, 17 September 2026, a Japan eSIM store page priced a 7-day unlimited plan on the Softbank network at £20.50, which is £35.50 less with no cap on the data.

The EE columns below are £8.00 and 500 MB multiplied by the number of days. Because Zone 3 has no weekly pass, that line never bends. A fortnight is fourteen separate £8.00 days, £112.00 for 7 GB.

The trade is that a data eSIM carries data only. Your EE number stays live on the UK SIM for calls and texts, which is why most people run both and keep the EE line for the bank's verification message. How a travel eSIM works covers the dual-SIM setup, and our Japan eSIM guide covers the networks. Prices also move with demand, see Japan eSIM prices in Golden Week.

What happens if you do not buy a pass in Japan?

Your phone still handles calls and texts, at Rest of World standard rates. The guide sets making or receiving a call at £2.46 a minute across all ROW zones, a text at 98p and a picture message at 98p. A text to a UK premium number is £2.94. Voicemail in a ROW zone is charged at that same per-minute rate, so clearing one costs £2.46 a minute.

Data behaves differently. With no pass it simply does not run, which is the safer failure mode. An unexpected £2.46 minute is survivable, an unmetered data bill is not. The flip side is that landing in Tokyo with no pass and no eSIM leaves you offline until you buy something. Local Wi-Fi draws down neither your UK allowance nor your pass data.

Two smaller lines matter. Roaming in ROW zones is not available at all on Safer SIM plans. And the Republic of Ireland is included in your UK allowance, a different arrangement covered in EE and Ireland.

Is there a weekly EE pass for Japan, or a plan that includes it?

Not a weekly one. The 7-day and 15-day columns for ROW Zone 3 both read as unavailable. EE does offer a recurring version of the daily pass in Zones 1, 2 and 3 at the identical price, which automates the purchase without changing the £8.00 or the 500 MB. The guide also says UK domestic passes can be bought and used while roaming in those zones once the pass allowance is exhausted, so the 500 MB is toppable rather than a hard stop.

On bundled plans, the footnotes say the Roam Abroad Pass is included in Full Works plans taken after 29 August 2024, and was an Inclusive Extra on All Rounder and Full Works plans taken before 28 August 2024. The guide does not state which zones it covers, so read your own plan's roaming terms.

Before you fly, four checks.

  • Find your destination in the ROW zone table at the back of EE's price guide.
  • If it lands in Zone 3 or Zone 4, assume your UK data allowance does not travel with you.
  • Price the trip as £8.00 times the number of days, then set that against a data eSIM.
  • Check every country separately on a multi-stop trip, because the zone can change at the border.

Questions about esim

Does EE work in Japan?

Yes. Calls and texts work on arrival at Rest of World standard rates, £2.46 a minute and 98p a text according to the price guide dated 3 September 2026. Data does not run until you buy a pass, because EE requires one for data outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland. In Japan that pass costs £8.00 for 24 hours.

Is Japan included in EE roaming?

Not in the Roam Like Home sense. Japan is listed in EE ROW Zone 3, where the pass gives unlimited calls and texts plus 500 MB of data rather than your UK plan allowance. Zone 1 and Zone 2 destinations get the UK Plan Allowance instead. Japan is one of the few major Asian destinations sitting outside Zone 1.

How much data do you get with the EE Japan pass?

500 MB for each £8.00 pass, applied for 24 hours from the moment of purchase rather than midnight to midnight. Across a seven day trip that is 3.5 GB in total for £56.00. If you exhaust it, the guide says you can buy a UK domestic pass and use it while roaming in Zone 3.

Can I buy a 7-day EE roaming pass for Japan?

No. The price guide shows 7-day and 15-day passes for ROW Zone 1 and Zone 2 only, at £30.00 and £50.00 for Zone 1 and £40.00 and £60.00 for Zone 2. Both columns read as unavailable for Zone 3. A recurring daily pass exists at the identical £8.00 price, but it is still charged by the day.

Is an eSIM cheaper than EE roaming in Japan?

On the prices displayed on 17 September 2026, yes by a wide margin. Seven days of EE passes is £56.00 for 3.5 GB, while a 7-day unlimited Japan eSIM plan on the Softbank network was listed at £20.50. The eSIM covers data only, so most travellers keep the EE line switched on for calls and texts.

Why do some sites quote a much lower EE daily charge for Japan?

They are reusing EE's European figure. The guide sets a Daily EU Charge of £2.72 per day for the EU, EEA and Switzerland, a list that does not include Japan. Any daily figure below £8.00 attached to Japan is a European charge, often an older version of it. Some pages also use product names that do not appear in the guide at all.
